A disclosed share that rose while margin expanded. The FY2025 Annual Securities Report and Business Report (84th term, filed 2026-06-26) lists as FY2025 progress: 'Further expanded our market share in the semiconductor tester (ATE) market (CY2024: 58%; CY2025: 65%)', earned on net sales of ¥1,128,610 million at an operating income to net sales ratio of 44.2%, 'an increase of 14.9 percentage points from the previous fiscal year'. The share is a company metric and the filing says so — 'the ratio of Advantest's semiconductor tester sales to the overall size of the semiconductor tester market', where 'The semiconductor tester market size is estimated independently by Advantest based on certain assumptions and available information'. The same filing names seven principal tester competitors (Teradyne, Inc., CCTech, Accotest, YC Corp., Cohu, Inc., UniTest Co., Ltd. and EXICON Ltd.), so this is a lead held against a named field rather than an empty one.

Argued, not assumed. The FY2025 10-K does evidence a real moat in margin: total gross margin percentage rose 44.1% (2023) to 46.2% (2024) to 46.9% (2025) in markets the same filing describes as characterised by 'aggressive price competition, downward pressure on gross margins.' But the filing bounds the claim itself: it concedes 'a minority market share in the global smartphone, personal computer, tablet and wearables markets,' it discloses no retention, active-device or installed-base figure anywhere (its only 'large installed bases of active devices' reference describes competitors), and it discloses that both of the highest-margin layers are already being cut down by force -- Apple is 'currently subject to a court order preventing it from imposing any commission or fee on certain purchases' on the U.S. App Store storefront, has had to open 'alternative methods of distribution for iOS and iPadOS apps, alternative payment processing' in the EU, and warns that a reversal on appeal in the Google search case could impose remedies 'prohibiting Google from offering the Company commercial terms for search distribution.' A moat that earns 46.9% gross margin but whose most profitable layer is being narrowed by two courts and a regulator is narrow, not wide.

The FY2025 10-K supports a real but bounded advantage. The Competition section says the company believes "mRNA as a medicine coupled with our capabilities across mRNA technology, drug discovery, development and manufacturing provide us with a competitive advantage," and the Intellectual Property section backs that with more than 260 issued or allowed U.S. patents or applications, more than 140 granted or allowed outside the U.S., 485 pending applications, and latest-to-expire granted patents on all three approved products projected to 2041 in the U.S. and 2036 in Europe. Item 1A cuts the band down from wide: it opens the competition risk with "The vaccine market, and pharmaceutical market more generally, is intensely competitive," says Moderna "ha[s] been excluded from selling our COVID vaccines in many European markets due to a competitor's contract with the European Commission, which does not lapse until year-end 2026," that in RSV it "entered a market already occupied by two larger competitors," and that rivals "have exploited and may in the future exploit their greater size, infrastructure, resources and experience." The same section reports net losses of $2.8 billion in 2025 and $3.6 billion in 2024 against 2025 total revenue of $1.9 billion.

What management itself names as the source of the position is a proprietary platform. The July 29, 2026 Q1 FY2026 results briefing states: 'Our leading SoC Test platform, V93000, has been widely adopted across a broad range of customers in the increasingly complex AI semiconductor markets, where advanced packaging technologies including GPUs, ASICs, and CPUs are being adopted. It serves as a key foundation that underpins our competitive advantage.' The 84th-term report shows the spend behind it: R&D was approximately ¥71.4 billion in FY2024 and ¥78.1 billion in FY2025, 'The number of employees in its research and development division is approximately 30% of the Advantest workforce', and in the Test System Business Segment 'a large and ongoing investment in research and development is necessary in order to maintain market competitiveness'. Its stated IP mitigation is that 'Advantest strategically and proactively files patent applications during product development and prior to product shipment'.

switching costs

The 10-K locates the durable advantage in an integrated stack and its third-party ecosystem, not in patents: it names 'a strong third-party software and accessories ecosystem' among the principal competitive factors and states the Company 'designs and develops nearly the entire solution for its products, including the hardware, operating system, numerous software applications and related services,' while explicitly disclaiming IP as the source -- 'No single intellectual property right is solely responsible for protecting the Company's products and services' and the Company 'relies primarily on the innovative skills, technical competence and marketing abilities of its personnel.' The remedies now in force confirm the diagnosis negatively: the same filing describes being required to permit alternative distribution and alternative payment processing in the EU and being barred from charging commission on certain linked-out purchases in the U.S. -- remedies aimed squarely at lowering the cost of leaving Apple's rails, which is what a switching-cost moat is.

The filing locates the advantage in a patent and know-how estate, not in customer lock-in or cost. Intellectual Property describes "an expansive, multi-layered IP estate" whose platform claims cover mRNA chemistry, sequence optimization, engineering elements, LNP delivery systems and "innovative processes for the manufacture and analysis of mRNA drug substance and formulated drug product," alongside "substantial proprietary know-how associated with related manufacturing processes" and a trademark portfolio of at least 1,400 registrations. Nothing in the filing claims switching costs or a cost advantage; Item 1A says the opposite, that competitors leverage "larger supply chains and greater purchasing power."

Leadership clear leader

The 84th-term report discloses Advantest's tester-market share at 65% in CY2025, up from 58% in CY2024, and carries the same 65% among its disclosed management metrics against a target of '58% or more'; the filing defines it as Advantest's semiconductor tester sales over a market size 'estimated independently by Advantest based on certain assumptions and available information'. The July 29, 2026 briefing names the platform behind that share — V93000, 'widely adopted across a broad range of customers in the increasingly complex AI semiconductor markets'. Teradyne, Inc. heads the filing's list of principal tester competitors.

fast follower

Apple leads on integration and margin rather than on units, and the filing says so: it 'has a minority market share in the global smartphone, personal computer, tablet and wearables markets,' while competitors have 'broad product lines, low-priced products, large installed bases of active devices, and large customer bases.' On the AI axis that defines this graph, Apple is following rather than leading -- it now licenses a rival's frontier models to power Siri (see the Apple Intelligence / Siri row and its citation) while pushing its own advantage down into silicon.

co leader

The Business section opens with the company's own claim that "Moderna is a pioneer and leader in the field of mRNA medicine." The Competition section frames the commercial reality more narrowly as a contest against a small named set: "We largely compete against Pfizer and BioNTech for sales of our COVID vaccines, whose vaccine is also based on mRNA technology. We also compete against other vaccines, including Sanofi and Novavax's." It does not claim a rank anywhere, and it places Moderna behind in the other approved category: in RSV "we compete against Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline, who entered the U.S. market prior to us, and our RSV sales have been minimal to date."

Pricing power strong

Q1 FY2026 gross profit was ¥255,553 million on net sales of ¥367,473 million, and the July 29, 2026 briefing states the resulting figure itself: 'Gross margin reached 69.5%', with 'an operating margin of 51.7%'. Management attributes that level to 'a favorable sales mix and limited inventory valuation losses amid the robust demand environment', not to price, and guides FY2026 full-year gross margin to 66–67% and operating margin to 49.4% after incorporating 'the impact of higher component costs, particularly for memory-related components'. FY2025 closed at a 44.2% operating margin, up 14.9 points year on year, on sales up 44.7%.

strong

The 10-K's own gross-margin table: total gross margin percentage 44.1% (2023) to 46.2% (2024) to 46.9% (2025), with Services at 75.4% versus Products at 36.8%, and iPhone net sales rising 'due to higher net sales of Pro models' -- mix moving up, not down. Held against the filing's own hedge that 'gross margins will be subject to volatility and downward pressure,' the realised trend is the stronger evidence.

weak

Item 1A states that "certain U.S. private vaccine market practices, including regarding discounts, rebates and returns, may cause us to realize significantly lower revenues than list prices," and that "in some instances, our competitors have been able to offer more attractive terms than we can, and they may continue to do so in the future." On the flu candidate it says that in a well-developed market Moderna "may need to offer more favorable terms to gain market share (which we may be unable to do), which may negatively impact our profitability." The Commercial section adds that its markets are "characterized, particularly in the U.S. (our largest market), by a fragmented end customer base, unpredictability in orders and seasonality of deliveries."

Summary

Advantest sells the test step that certifies silicon before it ships, and its position there is disclosed rather than inferred: its own tester-market-share metric moved from 58% in CY2024 to 65% in CY2025 (84th-term Annual Securities Report), against a market size the filing says Advantest estimates itself. The lead is concentrated in SoC test — the July 29, 2026 briefing calls V93000 'our leading SoC Test platform' and 'a key foundation that underpins our competitive advantage' — and the customer base runs straight into the AI chain: NVIDIA International, Inc. was ¥228,273 million, or 20.2%, of FY2025 consolidated net sales, having been below the filing's 10% disclosure threshold the prior year, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. at ¥124,922 million, or 11.1%. Economics moved with it: FY2025 operating margin was 44.2%, up 14.9 points, and Q1 FY2026 gross margin reached 69.5%, which management attributes to 'a favorable sales mix and limited inventory valuation losses amid the robust demand environment' rather than to price. The counterweights sit in the same documents. The 84th-term report's customer-trust risk factor warns that if Advantest fails to meet expectations on ramp-up and post-sales service, 'the maintenance or expansion of Advantest's market share may be constrained'; it names separate competitor sets in test handlers (Hon. Precision, CCTech, Cohu, TechWing) and device interfaces (TSE, ISC, BeLINK) where no share is disclosed at all; and the July 29, 2026 briefing guides FY2026 full-year gross margin down to 66–67% having 'incorporated the impact of higher component costs, particularly for memory-related components, mainly in the second half of the fiscal year'.

Apple's moat is usually asserted through the ecosystem; the FY2025 10-K neither quantifies nor claims retention, so the evidence has to be read elsewhere in the filing. Where it does show is mix and margin: Services reached $109.2B of $416.2B net sales (+14%) at a 75.4% gross margin against 36.8% on Products, so 26% of revenue delivered $82.3B of the $195.2B total gross margin, and iPhone grew 'due to higher net sales of Pro models.' That profit concentration is also the vulnerability the filing itself flags: Apple 'earns revenue from licensing arrangements with Google LLC and other companies to offer their search services on the Company's platforms,' arrangements 'currently subject to government investigations and legal proceedings' after Google was found to have violated U.S. antitrust laws on August 5, 2024 and the D.C. District Court ordered remedies on September 2, 2025 -- with the 10-K warning that a reversal on appeal could impose DOJ's proposed remedies 'prohibiting Google from offering the Company commercial terms for search distribution,' which 'could materially adversely affect the Company's ability to earn revenue from such licensing arrangements.' Apple never discloses the size of that payment in the filing -- the concentration is admitted but not measured. Alongside it, the App Store toll has already been reduced in both jurisdictions. What is not in dispute is the vertical integration: Apple designs the silicon and now the cellular modem, and uses 'custom components available from only one source.' Read together: a genuine, margin-visible switching-cost moat around an integrated stack, with its two most profitable layers under active legal reduction.

Moderna's 10-K rests its competitive case on the mRNA platform and the IP wrapped around it: the company states it believes its capabilities "across mRNA technology, drug discovery, development and manufacturing" differentiate it, and reports more than 260 issued or allowed U.S. patents or applications, more than 140 granted or allowed abroad, 485 pending applications, and granted patents on Spikevax, mNEXSPIKE and mRESVIA projected to expire in 2041 (U.S.) and 2036 (Europe), plus trade secrets and manufacturing know-how it calls substantial. The filing is equally direct about the limits: the principal COVID rival's vaccine "is also based on mRNA technology"; a competitor's European Commission contract keeps Moderna out of many European COVID markets until year-end 2026; RSV sales are "minimal to date" behind Pfizer and GSK; and the risk factors warn that "the mRNA medicines field is growing rapidly, with increased competitive pressure from large and more established pharmaceutical companies." What is durable is science and plant rather than commercial position: Moderna bought and operates the Norwood (MTC) campus, completed a Marlborough site purpose-built for intismeran autogene that began shipping patient batches in September 2025, and runs UK, Canada and Australia facilities that were fully licensed in 2025, each government having entered a multi-year commitment to purchase mRNA products from the company.

Chain position

Back-end capital equipment: Advantest's testers certify devices after fabrication, and the 84th-term report's FY2025 major-customer table puts NVIDIA International, Inc. at 20.2% and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. at 11.1% of consolidated net sales, with overseas sales 97.8% of the total.

Applications-layer name in the AI chain: the 10-K describes designing 'nearly the entire solution' and using custom components 'available from only one source,' making Apple a large, concentrated buyer of leading-edge silicon rather than a supplier of AI compute to anyone else.

A vertically integrated mRNA developer-manufacturer that sits between upstream licensors and government or retail buyers: it in-licenses the Penn modified-mRNA patents non-exclusively through Cellscript and mRNA RiboTherapeutics at low-single-digit royalties and NIAID's prefusion coronavirus spike and prefusion RSV F patents, manufactures drug substance at the owned Norwood MTC campus and individualized therapy at Marlborough, runs Moderna-built plants in the UK, Canada and Australia against multi-year government purchase commitments, and relies on CMOs for critical raw material production and fill-finish.
