Moat rating narrow

The filing's own words support a narrow moat. Auctions run 'at vast scale and at microsecond-level speeds,' revenue is earned only 'when our advertisers achieve their return on advertising spend targets,' and FY2025 adjusted EBITDA margin was 82.3%. What limits the width: clients 'are not required to enter into long-term agreements' and 'Substantially all of the Company's contracts with customers are cancelable at any time'; the solutions 'primarily operate in the mobile app ecosystem and specifically mobile gaming'; and distribution runs through 'the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store, and Meta' while AppLovin relies 'in part on IDFA.'

The FY2025 10-K (filed 2025-11-19) says the company believes its integration capabilities, technical and project management acumen, application engineering expertise and specialty contracting experience 'give us a sustainable competitive advantage in our markets', and that 'a significant portion of our business is from repeat customers', many times involving EPC firms 'with whom we often have long, established relationships'. Neither the filing nor Powell's record shows that edge protecting returns. Item 1A warns 'Our industry is highly competitive' and says certain competitors 'may have lower cost structures' and 'may, therefore, be able to provide their products or services at lower prices'. Item 1 says products are 'typically awarded in competitive bid situations' and that projects 'are typically non-recurring.' Stored fundamentals from Powell's filings show operating margin between -4.9% and 7.1% in every fiscal year from FY2011 to FY2022, with operating losses in FY2017 (-$19.3M on $395.9M of revenue) and FY2018 (-$9.1M on $448.7M). Operating margin has since risen to 19.7% in FY2025 ($217.9M on $1,104.3M), but the 10-K credits the gross-margin gain to 'favorable volume leverage and strong project execution in a stable pricing environment', not to a competitive edge. A self-described advantage that left operating margin no higher than 7.1% in any year from FY2011 to FY2022 is not shown to be a moat, so the band is none.

In its 2025 Universal Registration Document the Group states a #1 market position in electrical distribution in each of its four end markets, plus #1 in grid and #1 in industrial data and safety, reached through a channel it sizes at more than 1.4 million contractors and electricians alongside panel builders, integrators and distributors; FY2025 closed with a record-high backlog of EUR 25,362 million and, per the CFO section, a fifth consecutive year of profitability expansion, with adjusted EBITA margin at 18.7% (+50bps organic).

Moat type network effects

Network effects, with a caveat. The 10-K states the loop: as more advertisers use the solutions 'we gain access to more data regarding users and user engagement,' 'further strengthening our scaled distribution,' and 'As our distribution grows, we gain better insights for Axon AI.' The mechanism is two-sided matching of advertiser demand to publisher supply, though much of the force comes from data-and-learning scale. It is not switching costs, since contracts are 'cancelable at any time,' nor intangibles or IP, since 'there can be no assurance that we will adequately protect our intellectual property or that it will provide any competitive advantage.'

none

The 10-K describes engineering know-how, not protected technology or lock-in. It says 'We consider our engineering, project management, systems integration and technical support capabilities vital to the success of our business', that 'Powell's expertise in vacuum circuit breaker engineering is internationally recognized', and that unpatented technology, including engineering technical skills and know-how, 'is important to our overall business'. It also says 'we believe that the growth of our business will depend primarily upon the quality of our products and our relationships with our customers, rather than the extent of our patent protection', so patents are not the source. Switching costs are not shown: projects are 'typically awarded in competitive bid situations' and 'typically non-recurring', even though 'a significant portion of our business is from repeat customers'. The same filing says some competitors 'are significantly larger and have substantially greater global resources such as engineering, manufacturing and marketing', so the know-how is a capability rivals also bring to each bid, not a demonstrated moat source; the type is none.

The URD's own durability table assigns a Reference Service Life of 20 years to low-voltage equipment and 15 years to medium-voltage products, and the Group monetizes that installed stock repeatedly: it attributes Field Services growth to an increasing installed base, notably from Data Center, and reports recurring revenue at 79% of its agnostic-software revenues (AVEVA, ETAP, RIB), up 2 points year on year, with AVEVA ARR up +12% as of December 31, 2025.

Leadership at parity

The filing discloses no share of any market, names 'Meta, Google, Amazon, and Unity Software' as competitors, and concedes rivals 'may have greater resources' and 'better technological or data analytics capabilities, or stronger brands or competitive positions in certain product segments.' Its one positional statement is parity language: 'We believe we compete favorably with respect to these factors.' Two unquantified points cut upward: Meta and Google are also clients, and MAX is called 'the preferred in-app bidding solution for many publishers worldwide.'

source: sec.gov

at parity

The 10-K gives no share or rank. It says Powell competes 'with a small number of multinational competitors', naming ABB, Eaton, Schneider and Siemens Industries, and that some are 'significantly larger and have substantially greater global resources'. It adds that bid evaluation varies 'from project to project', covering technical support, engineering and manufacturing capability, equipment rating, delivered value, scheduling and price. Powell therefore competes bid by bid alongside those multinationals rather than leading the category.

clear leader

The URD's end-market pages report #1 positions in electrical distribution across all four end markets, #1 in grid, #1 in industrial data and safety, and the most complete data-center portfolio including liquid cooling. These are the Group's own stated positions rather than a third-party ranking, and the same document names ABB, Legrand, Siemens, Eaton, Emerson, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Rockwell Automation, Fuji Electric, Mitsubishi Electric and Yokogawa as the peer panel it is benchmarked against for TSR, a panel its compensation policy characterizes as business competitors.

Pricing power strong

Strong, with the mechanism shown. The 10-K states that 'Advertisers are charged dynamically based on their campaign goals , rather than a simple fixed price per impression or per action.' Growth composition is the evidence: FY2025 revenue +70% with 'the volume of installations increased 3% and net revenue per installation increased 72%'; H1 2026 +56% with per-installation revenue +75% against 'a decrease in the volume of installations of 10%.' Adjusted EBITDA margin was 82.3% in FY2025 and 84.2% in H1 2026, though payment is performance-contingent and contracts cancel at will.

source: sec.gov

weak

The 10-K says gross margin rose to 29% of revenue in FY2025 from 27% in FY2024, 'due to favorable volume leverage and strong project execution in a stable pricing environment'. The 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/80420/000008042026000107/powl-20260630.htm) gives the same reason for 30% in the first nine months of FY2026, so neither filing credits price. Before this upcycle, stored fundamentals from Powell's filings show gross margin between 12.8% and 21.6% in every fiscal year from FY2011 to FY2022 (FY2022: $85.0M of gross profit on $532.6M of revenue, about 16%), which fits cyclical volume leverage more than pricing power. The limits are explicit: the 10-K says 'Fixed-price contracts can limit our ability to pass these increases to our customers', and Item 1A says certain competitors 'may, therefore, be able to provide their products or services at lower prices'. The one offset is cost pass-through, not price-setting: the 10-K says 'we believe we can manage this volatility through contract pricing adjustments'. Pricing power is rated weak.

source: sec.gov

moderate

Price is real but has not been covering input costs. FY2025 gross margin fell to 42.1%, down 40bps organic, with the URD stating that accelerating Q4 product pricing was insufficient to fully offset mix and raw-material cost inflation inclusive of tariffs; in the July 30, 2026 half-year release, gross pricing on products of +EUR 280 million was outweighed by a raw-material impact of -EUR 330 million and net tariffs of -EUR 104 million for a net price impact of -EUR 154 million, and the Group says it expects to be net-price positive only in H2 2026.

Summary

One reportable segment: an AI-priced auction matching advertiser demand to publisher supply, where 'Revenue from Axon Ads Manager comprises substantially all of our revenue.' The filed flywheel is real - more advertiser spend yields more user-engagement data, 'further strengthening our scaled distribution,' which feeds Axon AI - and it converts: FY2025 revenue $5.48B, up 70%, at an 82.3% adjusted EBITDA margin, carried by price (net revenue per installation +72%) not volume (installations +3%). What the filing does not evidence is a lock. Contracts are cancelable at any time, revenue concentrates in mobile gaming, and the distribution and identifier layers belong to Apple, Google and Meta - two of whom are simultaneously named competitors and disclosed clients. Wide margins with no disclosed structural lock is narrow.

Powell designs, builds and services custom-engineered power-distribution packages: power control rooms, E-Houses, switchgear and medium-voltage breakers. Its FY2025 10-K says the company believes its integration, project-management and application-engineering capabilities 'give us a sustainable competitive advantage in our markets', and that a significant portion of its business comes from repeat customers, often through EPC firms with which it has long relationships. The record does not show that edge protecting returns. Work is typically won in competitive bids, projects are typically non-recurring, and the 10-K names ABB, Eaton, Schneider and Siemens Industries as principal competitors, some of which it calls significantly larger. The company says it believes growth depends on product quality and customer relationships rather than patents. Stored fundamentals from Powell's filings show operating margin between -4.9% and 7.1% in every fiscal year from FY2011 to FY2022, with operating losses in FY2017 and FY2018. In the current cycle, gross margin reached 29% in FY2025 (10-K) and 30% in the first nine months of FY2026 (10-Q, quarter ended June 30, 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/80420/000008042026000107/powl-20260630.htm). Both filings attribute that to favorable volume leverage and strong project execution 'in a stable pricing environment', not to price increases. The same 10-Q reports backlog of $2.4 billion and says diversification into electric utility and data centers 'has reduced the cyclicality of our business.' It also cautions that as data center projects become a larger component of backlog and revenues, the product mix may shift, 'as such projects will likely require less custom engineered-to-order equipment and systems than other end markets', which is the custom-engineering skill the claimed edge rests on.

Schneider sells electrification, automation and digitalization into four end markets — Data Center & Networks (30% of 2025 orders), Buildings (29%), Industry (27%) and Infrastructure (14%) — and its 2025 URD claims a #1 position in electrical distribution in every one of them, sold through an ecosystem of panel builders, integrators, distributors and more than 1.4 million contractors and electricians. Energy Management is the larger and higher-margin half: EUR 33,130 million of FY2025 revenue, 83% of the Group, up +10.3% organic at a 21.8% adjusted EBITA margin, against EUR 7,022 million and 14.2% at Industrial Automation. In the July 30, 2026 half-year release the Data Center end-market continues to lead growth: Systems, 35% of Q2 revenues, grew +28% organic with prefabricated solutions, cooling technologies and 3-phase UPS all seeing significant growth.

Chain position

Demand-side AI ad platform: it monetizes third-party mobile-game publishers' inventory and sells outcomes to advertisers, so it sits downstream of Apple/Google app distribution and Apple's IDFA identifier layer and upstream of publisher monetization. Meta and Google are simultaneously named competitors and disclosed clients. Single reportable segment after the June 2025 Apps divestiture.

Supplies custom-engineered switchgear and power control rooms to oil and gas, utility and commercial/industrial projects. Its Q3 FY2026 bookings included 'a data center project valued at over $400 million' (10-Q, quarter ended June 30, 2026, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/80420/000008042026000107/powl-20260630.htm).

Supplies the power and cooling layer beneath AI compute: Data Center & Networks was 30% of 2025 orders, a market the URD places on a market CAGR above 10% from 2025 to 2030.
