Moat rating narrow

The FY2025 10-K shows a real moat — 3.58 billion Family daily active people (December 2025 average, +7% YoY) and a 52% Family of Apps operating margin — but the same filing qualifies its durability on three fronts it discloses itself: it says "We face significant competition in every aspect of our business"; it names "competitive products and services, such as TikTok, that have reduced some users' engagement with our products and services"; and it discloses that since 2020 it has been "subject to a lawsuit by the FTC alleging that we violated antitrust laws" that "seeks ... divestiture or reconstruction of Instagram and WhatsApp." A moat a regulator is actively litigating to break up, and whose ad targeting depends on iOS/Android policies Meta does not set, reads narrow rather than wide.

narrow

The FY2025 20-F Competition section cuts both ways: UMC calls itself "one of the world's largest independent semiconductor foundries" with production capacity "currently among the largest of all semiconductor foundries in the world" and says it believes it competes favorably with competitors on each principal element of foundry competition, yet in the same section concedes that "[s]ome of our competitors have substantially greater production, financial, research and development and marketing resources than we have" and that "several new dedicated foundries have commenced operations and compete directly with us," whose entry is "likely to initiate a trend of competitive pricing and create potential overcapacity in legacy technology" that "may erode our profit margins." A real but bounded advantage, not a durable wide one.

narrow

Narrow, not wide, because the FY2026 10-K documents a strong installed base and a competitive position the company itself says is under erosion. On the asset side: revenue of $4.7 billion (29% growth in each of the last three fiscal years), 13,328 total customers up from 10,996, 790 of the Forbes Global 2000 contributing about 43% of revenue, 733 customers above $1 million in trailing-12-month product revenue up from 576, a 125% net revenue retention rate, and more than 1,050 issued U.S. patents. Against that, Item 1A states plainly that adopting open data formats like Apache Iceberg means 'there is less customer “lock in” when our products are used in external environments' and that 'our support of open data formats may also reduce switching costs between us and our competitors'; that AWS, Azure and GCP 'generally compete in all of our markets' while also supplying the infrastructure a 'substantial majority of our business is run on'; and that the company remains loss-making at $1.3 billion of net loss for the year.

Moat type network effects

The 10-K Competition section describes a three-sided network in Meta's own words: it competes "to attract, engage, and retain people who use our products, to attract and retain businesses that use our free or paid business and advertising services, and to attract and retain developers who build compelling applications that integrate with our products," and elsewhere cites "the scale of our user, advertiser, and developer base." The same filing rules out an IP-based moat: "We do not believe that our proprietary technology is dependent on any single patent or copyright or groups of related patents or copyrights."

source: sec.gov

intangibles ip

The 20-F states plainly that "Our success depends on our ability to obtain patents, licenses and other intellectual property (IP) rights covering our production processes and activities," and reports more than 16,700 patents worldwide as of December 31, 2025, of which more than 7,490 are in the U.S., 623 domestic and foreign patents granted in 2025 alone, NT$17,725 million of R&D (7.5% of operating revenues) and 1,591 R&D professionals. The Competition section names where UMC believes it wins: it competes favorably "particularly [on] our technical competence and research and development capabilities." The proprietary specialty-process library, not scale or a network, is the cited source of the advantage.

switching costs

The filing makes its own affirmative claim of network effects — 'Our business benefits from powerful network effects. ... The more customers adopt our platform, the more data can be exchanged with other Snowflake customers, partners, data providers, and data consumers' — but the load-bearing, quantified evidence in the document points to switching costs. The platform is sold as the way to 'consolidate data into a single source of truth,' and the disclosed economics of that consolidation are a 125% net revenue retention rate and 733 customers above $1 million in trailing product revenue. Item 1A confirms the mechanism by naming what is at risk: open formats produce 'less customer “lock in”' and 'may also reduce switching costs.' The filing frames lock-in, not network density, as the thing erosion would take away.

Leadership co leader

Top-tier but shared: the 10-K reports 3.58 billion Family daily active people and $196.18 billion of 2025 advertising revenue, yet also states that TikTok has "reduced some users' engagement," that "each of Apple and Google have integrated competitive products with iOS and Android," and that Meta competes "with companies in the development and application of AI, particularly with respect to the development of frontier AI models."

source: sec.gov

fast follower

UMC describes a deliberate follow strategy in the 20-F: it intends "to avoid investments in technologies that do not present commercial potential for volume production" and believes "it is beneficial to defer investment in premature equipment needed to claim the earliest advanced technology and instead to purchase more advanced and less expensive versions of such equipment from vendors who design this equipment based on pre-production lessons learned from the earliest technology." The node ladder bears this out: the most advanced process in production in 2025 is Fab 12A's 0.014 micron, wafers at 14 nanometers and under rounded to 0.0% of wafer sales in each of 2023, 2024 and 2025, and the next rung — UMC's own 12nm FinFET process, which Intel replicated in 2025 "based on our electrical design rules and UMC-verified process" for manufacture at its Arizona fab — is only "expected to begin in 2027."

co leader

The 10-K contains no ranking, market-share figure, or claim of leadership, and it names no non-hyperscaler competitor by name. The band rests on disclosed scale — $4.7 billion of revenue, 13,328 customers, 9,060 employees across 36 countries — set against the filing's own statement that 'many of our competitors have substantially greater brand recognition, customer relationships, and financial, technical, and other resources than we do.' Co-leader among independent cloud data platforms; not a leader over AWS, Azure and GCP, which the filing says compete in all of its markets.

Pricing power strong

Ad-auction pricing, not list prices: the 10-K reports "the average price per ad increased by 9%" in 2025 after "an increase of 10% in 2024," driven by "an increase in advertising demand," alongside worldwide ARPP of $57.03 (+15%) and a 52% Family of Apps operating margin. The filing notes the gain was "partially offset by a higher number of ad impressions delivered ... in products, such as Reels, that monetize at lower rates."

source: sec.gov

weak

The 20-F claims no premium — "our current level of pricing is comparable to that of other leading foundries in each respective geometry" — and reports that 2025 average selling price declined 5.4%, driving gross margin down from 32.6% in 2024 to 29.0% in 2025 even as 12-inch-equivalent wafer shipments rose from 3,446 thousand to 3,870 thousand and average capacity utilization improved from 68.7% to 75.2%. It also notes that "[p]rices for wafers of a given level of technology generally decline over the processing technology life cycle."

source: sec.gov

moderate

The consumption model plus 125% net revenue retention shows real expansion pricing, and the filing argues it competes on 'pricing transparency and optimized price-performance.' But Item 1A limits how far that goes: competition 'may negatively impact our ability to acquire new customers ... put downward pressure on our prices and gross margins'; the company 'may not be able to ... offer as many discounts or free services as our competitors'; results depend on 'changes in our pricing model, including in response to significant price discounts by our competitors' and on 'customer optimization efforts that result in reduced consumption.' On the cost side, 'our costs and gross margins are significantly influenced by the prices we are able to negotiate with these public cloud providers, which in certain cases are also our competitors.'

Summary

Meta's advantage is the size of the user-advertiser-developer network it monetizes, not proprietary technology: 3.58 billion daily active people across the Family of Apps produced $196.18 billion of 2025 advertising revenue at a 52% segment operating margin, and the 10-K attributes 2025's 9% rise in average price per ad to "an increase in advertising demand, which we believe is mostly due to ongoing improvements to our ad performance from our ad targeting and measurement tools." The filing is equally explicit about what limits that network: TikTok has "reduced some users' engagement," Apple's iOS changes "limit our ability ... to target and measure ads effectively," the April 2025 European Commission decision against its "subscription for no ads" model pushed EU users onto less personalized ads that are "less relevant and effective," and the FTC is seeking divestiture of Instagram and WhatsApp. Reality Labs, the intended next platform, lost $19.19 billion in 2025 on $2.21 billion of revenue and is expected "to continue to operate at a loss for the foreseeable future."

UMC's durable asset is a proprietary mature- and specialty-node process library — 55/40/28/22nm embedded memory for MCU and automotive, 55/40/28/22/14nm embedded high-voltage for display drivers, 110/55nm BCD for power management, 55/28/22nm BSI-CSI for image sensors and 110/90/55/40nm RF-SOI — backed by more than 16,700 patents worldwide at end-2025 and 7.5% of revenue spent on R&D. That library keeps a concentrated customer base qualified into UMC's fabs (top ten customers were 57.0% of 2025 operating revenues; Texas Instruments, Intel, MediaTek, Realtek and Novatek are named as primary customers). What it does not buy is price: 2025 average selling price fell 5.4% and gross margin fell from 32.6% to 29.0%, while the filing warns that new dedicated foundries are likely to initiate competitive pricing and overcapacity in legacy technology.

Snowflake's advantage in its FY2026 10-K rests on being the consolidation point for enterprise data: a multi-cluster shared-data architecture with proprietary columnar storage and automatic micro-partitioning, delivered across three major public clouds and 53 interconnected regional deployments, that customers adopt as a single governed source of truth and then expand on — 125% net revenue retention, 790 of the Forbes Global 2000 as customers. The filing layers a collaboration claim on top, with sharing 'generally without copying or moving the underlying data' and a Marketplace of 'hundreds of live, ready-to-query third-party data sets and data products.' The same document is unusually candid about the counter-pressure: Iceberg and open formats reduce lock-in by the company's own account, the three hyperscalers compete across every market while setting the cloud costs that 'significantly influence' gross margins, and frontier AI model providers 'may seek to vertically integrate ... by expanding into the data storage and management layers.'

Chain position

Demand-side anchor of the AI build-out: the 10-K reports $72.22 billion of 2025 capital expenditures and says Meta has "designed and built our own data centers and key portions of our technical infrastructure," funded entirely by the advertising business.

Mature- and specialty-node wafer supplier: 2025 wafer sales were 41.4% communication, 30.6% consumer and 11.6% computer, with the AI tie indirect — 2.5D silicon interposers with deep-trench capacitors shipped to major customers for HPC, cloud computing and LLM applications.

Sits at the enterprise data and governance layer of the AI stack, and the AI exposure is explicit rather than incidental: the filing brands the product the 'AI Data Cloud,' lists AI as a product category, and put Snowflake Intelligence, Cortex Agents and a Managed MCP Server into general availability during the fiscal year. It is a buyer of hyperscaler compute and of third-party frontier models — 'strategic partnerships with foundational model providers deliver state-of-the-art models natively within Snowflake Cortex AI,' with stated 'model neutrality' — and a supplier of governed enterprise data and GPU-backed managed compute to AI applications built on top.
