Moat rating narrow

The moat is narrow rather than wide. The filing names real entry barriers in launch — capital, technological expertise, licences and established government and commercial relationships — and adds spectrum and orbital resources in connectivity, while warning that the company's "leadership position in various markets, especially in orbital launch services" could attract competition-law scrutiny. The AI segment has barriers too: "Our AI businesses likewise compete in markets characterized by significant barriers to entry." Durability is capped by three-to-five-year satellite lives that force perpetual replacement launches, but the moat is not eroding: subscribers are 12.0M against 6.0M.

wide

A disclosed share that rose while margin expanded. The FY2025 Annual Securities Report and Business Report (84th term, filed 2026-06-26) lists as FY2025 progress: 'Further expanded our market share in the semiconductor tester (ATE) market (CY2024: 58%; CY2025: 65%)', earned on net sales of ¥1,128,610 million at an operating income to net sales ratio of 44.2%, 'an increase of 14.9 percentage points from the previous fiscal year'. The share is a company metric and the filing says so — 'the ratio of Advantest's semiconductor tester sales to the overall size of the semiconductor tester market', where 'The semiconductor tester market size is estimated independently by Advantest based on certain assumptions and available information'. The same filing names seven principal tester competitors (Teradyne, Inc., CCTech, Accotest, YC Corp., Cohu, Inc., UniTest Co., Ltd. and EXICON Ltd.), so this is a lead held against a named field rather than an empty one.

narrow

Salesforce's own language caps this at narrow: Item 1 calls its market "highly competitive, rapidly evolving and fragmented, and subject to changing technology with low barriers to entry." What holds it above none is scale and contract duration: $72.4B total RPO at 2026-01-31 versus $63.4B (+14%), current RPO $35.1B versus $30.2B (+16%), on revenue of $41.5B (+10%). But cRPO growth "was positively impacted by three percent" by currency, and total RPO "includes approximately $2.2 billion" from Informatica, acquired November 2025. Adjusted, the contracted base still outgrows revenue, but by less than the headline implies.

Moat type cost scale

The advantage is cost and scale. The stated model is extreme vertical integration plus reusability driving unit cost down: per NASA, the first Falcon 9 cut launch cost to about $2,700/kg, roughly 85% below the $18,500/kg historical average, and Falcon 9 has "demonstrated the ability to refly a first-stage 34 times" (3/31/26). The filing credits rising cadence, cargo capacity and "declining unit costs—driven by rapid reusability—have generated a compounding competitive advantage". SpaceX also launches its own constellation, and Competition notes "some of these service providers are also launch customers of SpaceX". Spectrum and licence intangibles reinforce the cost advantage.

intangibles ip

What management itself names as the source of the position is a proprietary platform. The July 29, 2026 Q1 FY2026 results briefing states: 'Our leading SoC Test platform, V93000, has been widely adopted across a broad range of customers in the increasingly complex AI semiconductor markets, where advanced packaging technologies including GPUs, ASICs, and CPUs are being adopted. It serves as a key foundation that underpins our competitive advantage.' The 84th-term report shows the spend behind it: R&D was approximately ¥71.4 billion in FY2024 and ¥78.1 billion in FY2025, 'The number of employees in its research and development division is approximately 30% of the Advantest workforce', and in the Test System Business Segment 'a large and ongoing investment in research and development is necessary in order to maintain market competitiveness'. Its stated IP mitigation is that 'Advantest strategically and proactively files patent applications during product development and prior to product shipment'.

switching costs

Switching costs, with a caveat: the filing's clearest lock-in sentence is about rivals' customers, not its own. "Many prospective customers have invested substantial personnel and financial resources to implement and integrate their current enterprise software... may be reluctant or unwilling to migrate away" is a headwind to Salesforce's own growth. Evidence for its own base is architectural: Data 360 unifies data into "a single, governed source of truth," Agentforce runs on existing processes "without requiring customers to remove and rebuild," behind $72.4B of contracted revenue. Contracts run "typically 12 to 36 months" with no renewal obligation.

Leadership clear leader

SpaceX leads clearly in its two established segments but not in its newest. The prospectus calls it "the primary launch provider for the U.S. government" — 11 of 12 NSSL medium and heavy lift missions and all five U.S. crew and cargo ISS missions for NASA in 2025 — and says Starlink is "the sole low-latency network available globally", low-latency self-defined as under 70ms; it flags competition-law scrutiny risk from that leadership. AI is the exception, with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and Microsoft named as competitors, some with greater resources, in a segment the filing calls early stage. Cadence slipped: H1 2026 Falcon launches 77 versus 81, mass to orbit 1,041t versus 1,102t.

clear leader

The 84th-term report discloses Advantest's tester-market share at 65% in CY2025, up from 58% in CY2024, and carries the same 65% among its disclosed management metrics against a target of '58% or more'; the filing defines it as Advantest's semiconductor tester sales over a market size 'estimated independently by Advantest based on certain assumptions and available information'. The July 29, 2026 briefing names the platform behind that share — V93000, 'widely adopted across a broad range of customers in the increasingly complex AI semiconductor markets'. Teradyne, Inc. heads the filing's list of principal tester competitors.

clear leader

Clear leader in the category as it exists today, runner-up in the one it is being rebuilt into. Per IDC's Worldwide Semiannual Software Tracker on 2025 data, Salesforce was first in worldwide CRM applications for a thirteenth consecutive year at 20.0% share, and first in Sales (fourteenth year), Customer Service (thirteenth), Marketing (seventh), model-driven application platform (eleventh) and Integration (fourth). These come from Salesforce announcing its own IDC results via a trade outlet, in translation, not IDC primary material. In the same tracker's new Agent Build and Deploy segment it ranked second at 17.5%, albeit as fastest-growing vendor.

Pricing power moderate

Pricing power is moderate — a deliberate give-back from a cost position rather than weakness. Management states its strategy is "rather than prioritizing increases in ARPU" and expects Starlink ARPU to keep declining as it adds lower-priced plans and adjusts monthly service fees; the Q2 10-Q shows ARPU of $66 versus $85 while Connectivity operating income rose 79.4%. Launch sells on fixed-price contracts, one to five years for Launch Services and up to fourteen for Launch and Development. Concentration is material: about one-fifth of 2025 revenue came from U.S. federal agencies, with all launch contracts firm fixed-price and terminable at the government's convenience without advance notice.

strong

Q1 FY2026 gross profit was ¥255,553 million on net sales of ¥367,473 million, and the July 29, 2026 briefing states the resulting figure itself: 'Gross margin reached 69.5%', with 'an operating margin of 51.7%'. Management attributes that level to 'a favorable sales mix and limited inventory valuation losses amid the robust demand environment', not to price, and guides FY2026 full-year gross margin to 66–67% and operating margin to 49.4% after incorporating 'the impact of higher component costs, particularly for memory-related components'. FY2025 closed at a 44.2% operating margin, up 14.9 points year on year, on sales up 44.7%.

moderate

Gross margin rises across the Item 7 table — gross profit of $32,255M on $41,525M of revenue, 78% of total revenues in FY2026 against 77% in FY2025 and 75% in FY2024 — yet MD&A denies price as the cause: growth "was primarily caused by volume-driven increases from new business," and "Pricing was not a significant driver of the increase in revenues for the period." Item 1A names consumption-based pricing among attrition factors, says Agentforce and Data 360 monetization "remain relatively new and uncertain," and concedes "limited experience with determining optimal pricing for our consumption-based contracts."

Summary

Two real moats and one expensive bet. Launch and Starlink rest on facts the filing states outright: barriers of capital, technology, licences, spectrum and orbital resources; about 9,600 satellites, roughly 75% of all active maneuverable satellites in orbit; the only globally available low-latency network; a NASA-cited cost per kilogram about 85% below the historical average; a first stage reflown 34 times. Connectivity rivals buy launches from it. What caps it: satellites live three to five years and must be perpetually replaced; H1 2026 Falcon launches and mass to orbit both fell and Falcon 9 flights are expected to decline; about 20% of 2025 revenue is U.S. federal, competitively bid and terminable at will; 86% of Q2 capex ($15.8bn of $18.4bn) went to an AI segment whose cloud revenue sits with few customers on 90-day-terminable contracts. Q2 operating loss $143M; H1 loss $2,086M.

Advantest sells the test step that certifies silicon before it ships, and its position there is disclosed rather than inferred: its own tester-market-share metric moved from 58% in CY2024 to 65% in CY2025 (84th-term Annual Securities Report), against a market size the filing says Advantest estimates itself. The lead is concentrated in SoC test — the July 29, 2026 briefing calls V93000 'our leading SoC Test platform' and 'a key foundation that underpins our competitive advantage' — and the customer base runs straight into the AI chain: NVIDIA International, Inc. was ¥228,273 million, or 20.2%, of FY2025 consolidated net sales, having been below the filing's 10% disclosure threshold the prior year, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. at ¥124,922 million, or 11.1%. Economics moved with it: FY2025 operating margin was 44.2%, up 14.9 points, and Q1 FY2026 gross margin reached 69.5%, which management attributes to 'a favorable sales mix and limited inventory valuation losses amid the robust demand environment' rather than to price. The counterweights sit in the same documents. The 84th-term report's customer-trust risk factor warns that if Advantest fails to meet expectations on ramp-up and post-sales service, 'the maintenance or expansion of Advantest's market share may be constrained'; it names separate competitor sets in test handlers (Hon. Precision, CCTech, Cohu, TechWing) and device interfaces (TSE, ISC, BeLINK) where no share is disclosed at all; and the July 29, 2026 briefing guides FY2026 full-year gross margin down to 66–67% having 'incorporated the impact of higher component costs, particularly for memory-related components, mainly in the second half of the fiscal year'.

Salesforce is the incumbent of record in CRM applications and is paid like one: $41.5B of FY2026 revenue (+10%), 78% gross margin, $72.4B of contracted revenue not yet recognized, and first place in worldwide CRM for a thirteenth consecutive year at 20.0% share per IDC's tracker as announced by Salesforce. Enterprise data and workflow embedded through Data 360 and Agentforce is costly to unwind, and the agentic layer is deliberately built atop existing processes rather than requiring re-implementation. The limits are the company's own: it twice describes its market as having low barriers to entry, names AI-native startups whose solutions "may bypass traditional business process workflows or displace established user interfaces," ranks second at 17.5% in IDC's new Agent Build and Deploy segment, and concedes pricing did not drive FY2026 growth.

Chain position —

Back-end capital equipment: Advantest's testers certify devices after fabrication, and the 84th-term report's FY2025 major-customer table puts NVIDIA International, Inc. at 20.2% and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. at 11.1% of consolidated net sales, with overseas sales 97.8% of the total.

Applications-layer incumbent: sells enterprise CRM and agentic software to end customers across industries, consumes cloud infrastructure (third-party IaaS partners plus its own Hyperforce estate) and third-party LLMs, and sits upstream of no hardware supply chain. Exposure is to enterprise software budgets and to whether the agentic layer is captured by incumbent suites or AI-native entrants.
