A disclosed share that rose while margin expanded. The FY2025 Annual Securities Report and Business Report (84th term, filed 2026-06-26) lists as FY2025 progress: 'Further expanded our market share in the semiconductor tester (ATE) market (CY2024: 58%; CY2025: 65%)', earned on net sales of ¥1,128,610 million at an operating income to net sales ratio of 44.2%, 'an increase of 14.9 percentage points from the previous fiscal year'. The share is a company metric and the filing says so — 'the ratio of Advantest's semiconductor tester sales to the overall size of the semiconductor tester market', where 'The semiconductor tester market size is estimated independently by Advantest based on certain assumptions and available information'. The same filing names seven principal tester competitors (Teradyne, Inc., CCTech, Accotest, YC Corp., Cohu, Inc., UniTest Co., Ltd. and EXICON Ltd.), so this is a lead held against a named field rather than an empty one.

The 20-F describes a migration market made of SAP's own customers: RISE with SAP 'is targeted at our installed base customers and helps them on their journey from legacy ERP systems to SAP Business Suite' — an installed base so entrenched that moving WITHIN the vendor is a multi-year journey, with the Q2 2026 statement showing €22.9 billion of contractually committed cloud backlog, up 27%.

Eli Lilly's FY2025 10-K states "Intellectual property protection is critical" and that compound patents provide roughly 20-year market exclusivity ("patents in each relevant country last for a period of 20 years"), warning that loss of patent protection causes a "severe and rapid decline in revenues." Backed by an 83.0% gross margin (up from 81.3% in 2024) and a fast-growing, patent-protected incretin franchise (Mounjaro +99%, Zepbound +175% in 2025), the economic moat is wide and durable. What management itself names as the source of the position is a proprietary platform. The July 29, 2026 Q1 FY2026 results briefing states: 'Our leading SoC Test platform, V93000, has been widely adopted across a broad range of customers in the increasingly complex AI semiconductor markets, where advanced packaging technologies including GPUs, ASICs, and CPUs are being adopted. It serves as a key foundation that underpins our competitive advantage.' The 84th-term report shows the spend behind it: R&D was approximately ¥71.4 billion in FY2024 and ¥78.1 billion in FY2025, 'The number of employees in its research and development division is approximately 30% of the Advantest workforce', and in the Test System Business Segment 'a large and ongoing investment in research and development is necessary in order to maintain market competitiveness'. Its stated IP mitigation is that 'Advantest strategically and proactively files patent applications during product development and prior to product shipment'.

switching costs

ERP is the system of record for a company's core processes; the 20-F's own strategy language — SAP Business Suite as 'the destination for all our customers,' with AI-enabled migration tools easing the journey off SAP's own legacy systems — is a switching-cost moat described from the inside.

Per the LLY FY2025 10-K, the pharma protection "anticipated to be of most relevance" is "patents claiming the active ingredient (the compound patent)," supplemented by regulatory data protection, FDA approvals, and brands — i.e., intangible assets. The 10-K notes that without such protection, products face intense generic and biosimilar price competition that erodes revenue quickly.

Leadership clear leader

The 84th-term report discloses Advantest's tester-market share at 65% in CY2025, up from 58% in CY2024, and carries the same 65% among its disclosed management metrics against a target of '58% or more'; the filing defines it as Advantest's semiconductor tester sales over a market size 'estimated independently by Advantest based on certain assumptions and available information'. The July 29, 2026 briefing names the platform behind that share — V93000, 'widely adopted across a broad range of customers in the increasingly complex AI semiconductor markets'. Teradyne, Inc. heads the filing's list of principal tester competitors.

clear leader

Grounded in scale and position rather than an asserted share: the 20-F describes a market segment consisting of SAP's own legacy estates (RISE), and the Q2 statement shows Cloud ERP Suite revenue of €5.5 billion in a single quarter, up 25% — no competitor filing this site tracks describes an installed-base market of its own.

Duopoly with Novo Nordisk: Novo's own FY2025 20-F names "Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly [as] the most significant companies measured by market share" in the global diabetes and GLP-1 markets. Lilly is ascendant — the 20-F concedes Wegovy's years-long US anti-obesity prescription lead "was overtaken by a competing GLP-1 based product in the beginning of 2025" (Lilly's tirzepatide) — but Novo still cites Ozempic as "the leading product by sales," so co-leader is the honest band. Pricing power strong

Q1 FY2026 gross profit was ¥255,553 million on net sales of ¥367,473 million, and the July 29, 2026 briefing states the resulting figure itself: 'Gross margin reached 69.5%', with 'an operating margin of 51.7%'. Management attributes that level to 'a favorable sales mix and limited inventory valuation losses amid the robust demand environment', not to price, and guides FY2026 full-year gross margin to 66–67% and operating margin to 49.4% after incorporating 'the impact of higher component costs, particularly for memory-related components'. FY2025 closed at a 44.2% operating margin, up 14.9 points year on year, on sales up 44.7%.

moderate

Q2 2026: total revenue up 9% with non-IFRS operating profit up 7% — profit growing slightly behind revenue, and the 2026 profit outlook 'updated to reflect dilutive impact from Dremio and Prior Labs acquisitions' rather than raised.

Mixed. The LLY 10-K shows an 83.0% gross margin (up 1.7pp), evidence of strong list-price power on exclusive branded drugs; but it repeatedly notes 2025 revenue growth was "partially offset by lower realized prices" for both Mounjaro and Zepbound, alongside heavy PBM/formulary rebate pressure and default anti-obesity coverage restrictions (e.g., US self-insured employers "must generally opt in" for obesity-drug coverage). Net pricing power is therefore moderate, not strong.

Summary

Advantest sells the test step that certifies silicon before it ships, and its position there is disclosed rather than inferred: its own tester-market-share metric moved from 58% in CY2024 to 65% in CY2025 (84th-term Annual Securities Report), against a market size the filing says Advantest estimates itself. The lead is concentrated in SoC test — the July 29, 2026 briefing calls V93000 'our leading SoC Test platform' and 'a key foundation that underpins our competitive advantage' — and the customer base runs straight into the AI chain: NVIDIA International, Inc. was ¥228,273 million, or 20.2%, of FY2025 consolidated net sales, having been below the filing's 10% disclosure threshold the prior year, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. at ¥124,922 million, or 11.1%. Economics moved with it: FY2025 operating margin was 44.2%, up 14.9 points, and Q1 FY2026 gross margin reached 69.5%, which management attributes to 'a favorable sales mix and limited inventory valuation losses amid the robust demand environment' rather than to price. The counterweights sit in the same documents. The 84th-term report's customer-trust risk factor warns that if Advantest fails to meet expectations on ramp-up and post-sales service, 'the maintenance or expansion of Advantest's market share may be constrained'; it names separate competitor sets in test handlers (Hon. Precision, CCTech, Cohu, TechWing) and device interfaces (TSE, ISC, BeLINK) where no share is disclosed at all; and the July 29, 2026 briefing guides FY2026 full-year gross margin down to 66–67% having 'incorporated the impact of higher component costs, particularly for memory-related components, mainly in the second half of the fiscal year'.

SAP monetizes the stickiest software estate in enterprise computing twice over: a declining on-premise support stream and a growing cloud one, with the 20-F's 'flywheel' — Business AI enhancing Cloud ERP, which feeds Business Data Cloud, which fuels the AI — as the argument that the transition compounds rather than cannibalizes. The caveat is regulatory, in the filing's own words: the European Commission opened formal proceedings over on-premise maintenance and support policies, with suggested remedies market-tested in 2025 and 'pending final EC approval in 2026' — the moat's support-pricing half is under review.

Lilly's moat rests on patent-protected, FDA-approved branded medicines led by its tirzepatide incretin franchise: per the FY2025 10-K, Mounjaro ($22.97B) and Zepbound ($13.54B) together generated roughly 56% of 2025's $65.2B revenue (up 99% and 175% respectively), while compound patents confer ~20-year market exclusivity and support an 83.0% gross margin. Durable competition only emerges after patents and regulatory data protection lapse, at which point the 10-K warns generics and biosimilars drive a "severe and rapid decline in revenues."

Chain position

Back-end capital equipment: Advantest's testers certify devices after fabrication, and the 84th-term report's FY2025 major-customer table puts NVIDIA International, Inc. at 20.2% and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. at 11.1% of consolidated net sales, with overseas sales 97.8% of the total.

Layer-10 application incumbent embedding AI (Joule, Business AI) into the enterprise system of record.

Upstream branded-drug originator. Per the FY2025 10-K, US distribution flows through three wholesalers (McKesson, Cencora, Cardinal Health), each accounting for over 10% of consolidated revenue, into consolidated PBMs/payers whose formularies and rebate demands constrain net price; Lilly is also expanding a direct-to-patient channel, LillyDirect.
