Cipher (renamed Cipher Digital Inc. on 20 February 2026) holds signed, credit-supported leases but has not yet shown that they amount to a durable advantage. Its 2025 Form 10-K (filed 2026-02-24) says "Through the end of 2025, our revenue has been derived from mining bitcoin". Its Q2 2026 business update (2026-08-04, Exhibit 99.1, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1819989/000181998926000038/q226_earningsxprxdraftxvf.htm) reported "Q2 2026 Revenue of $25 million", and its first HPC rent began only in August 2026 at Black Pearl. The 10-K's own risk factors describe a contested market. They say "There has been an increasing number of businesses constructing HPC data centers, which has resulted in increasing competition and pricing pressure that may cause us to reduce our pricing in order to remain competitive", that "our data centers are single-tenant properties", and that lessees "will have the right to terminate the lease if there are significant delays in the completion of construction". At Barber Lake, where the 10-K targeted Phase I delivery "by September 30, 2026", a September 2026 amendment, made "In connection with change orders and the continued evolution of tenant requirements", moved data-hall deliveries to the fourth quarter of 2026 through the first quarter of 2027. Under it, Cipher "will bear the first $359.3 million of costs in excess of the initial budgeted amount" (2026-09-25). There is real counter-evidence: a 15-year Amazon lease, a Google-backstopped Fluidstack lease whose contracted life a "leading AI lab" extended to 20 years, and a third lease with an investment-grade hyperscale tenant. Until that capacity is delivered and paying rent, though, a moat is not shown, so the band is none.

TrendForce's 2Q26 foundry ranking (2026-09-09) puts SMIC third worldwide. Its revenue rose 20% QoQ to more than $3 billion and its share 'edged up to 5.4%, narrowing the gap with Samsung' (5.9%), far behind TSMC at 72.5%. TrendForce (2026-04-29, citing Reuters) adds: 'Currently, SMIC remains the only domestic player capable of producing chips using 7nm.' Those advantages are real in its home market, which was 90.2% of 2Q26 revenue per the 2Q26 results. They are also bounded. The 2025 annual report concedes: 'Compared with global industry leaders, the Company remains a certain gap in technical capability, and the current market share is relatively limited.' It warns that numerous domestic and foreign entrants mean 'the production capacity may fall into a state of structural oversupply'. And it notes that 'The Company was added to the U.S. Entity List in 2020', which brings 'certain challenges to the Company's supply chain security and business stability'.

narrow

Rambus sells into a market that an outside tracker shows held by three suppliers, and it earns well there, but nothing in the record stops the other two from competing on price. BigGo Finance (2026-07-16, https://finance.biggo.com/news/9dbf85c7-c887-4f5c-94ab-a86d984b880b), citing Frost & Sullivan, reports that 'only three companies—Montage Technology, Renesas Electronics, and Rambus—truly possess the capability to mass-produce DDR4/DDR5 memory interface chips' and that 'Based on 2024 revenue, these three manufacturers collectively hold over 93% of the market share.' The Q2 2026 results release (2026-07-27, https://www.rambus.com/second-quarter-2026-financial-results/) shows a GAAP operating margin of 35%, against 37% a year earlier. Against that, the FY2025 10-K calls the industry 'intensely competitive' with 'price erosion'. It says some license agreements require Rambus to give certain customers 'the lowest royalty rate that we provide to other customers', and that its top five customers were 'approximately 66% of our consolidated revenue' in 2025. On 2026-07-15 Seoul prosecutors raided the Korean offices of all three suppliers on suspicion that they colluded on prices (CBS NoCut News, https://en.nocutnews.co.kr/news/6548839); that is an allegation, not a finding. Narrow rather than wide, because the position is shared three ways among peers, and the 10-K warns that licenses can convert to 'fully paid-up' and that customers may adopt 'alternative technologies'.

Moat type none

No moat source is demonstrated yet. Switching costs are the most likely candidate, since the leases are long (15 years at Black Pearl; Barber Lake now a 20-year contracted life) and each site has a single tenant. But the 10-K says tenant guarantees "will only be effective after rent commencement under such leases and are subject to certain limitations", and by August 2026 rent had begun at only one site. The advantages the 10-K claims are the company's own. It speaks of "industry-leading expertise in originating and securing industrial-scale, greenfield data center sites" and of securing West Texas land "on more favorable terms than in more established data center markets". The same document says "there is significant competition for power capacity and energized facilities". Intellectual property is modest: "four granted United States patents and one issued patent in Taiwan". With 66 full-time employees, Cipher has no scale advantage over the competitors it names: CoreWeave, Digital Realty, Equinix, Vantage Data Centers and Aligned Data Centers.

cost scale

The cited advantage is manufacturing scale in a capital-heavy industry. The 2025 annual report says the wafer foundry industry 'has high barriers to entry due to technological hurdles, talent requirements, and continuous capital investment'. It adds that 'The foundries' capacity scale effect and collaboration capabilities in local industry chain have become one of the important factors for customers' assessment of supply chain stability and completeness.' It calls SMIC 'the front runner in Chinese Mainland, with leading manufacturing capability, manufacturing scale and comprehensive services'. Monthly capacity reached 1,058,750 standard logic 8-inch equivalent wafers by the end of 2025, and 1,096,500 in 2Q26 per the 2Q26 results, with 2Q26 capital expenditure of $1,835.7 million. Scale has not protected margins: the report shows gross margin of 21.0% in 2025, 18.0% in 2024 and 19.3% in 2023, against 38.0% in 2022.

source: trendforce.com

efficient scale

The protection is a small, concentrated market rather than a proprietary standard. Frost & Sullivan data reported by BigGo Finance (2026-07-16) put the global memory interface chip market at 'approximately $1.168 billion in 2024' and say only Montage, Renesas and Rambus can mass-produce DDR4/DDR5 memory interface chips, together holding 'over 93% of the market share'. CBS NoCut News (2026-07-15) calls the three 'major players that hold an oligopoly in the global MIC market' and says they supply Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and Micron. The FY2025 10-K adds an IP layer underneath: technology 'covered by 2,049 U.S. and foreign patents, with expiration dates ranging from 2026 to 2044', licensed to companies including Samsung, SK hynix, Micron, NVIDIA and Qualcomm.

Leadership fast follower

No independent share or rank was found. The 10-K names CoreWeave, Digital Realty, Equinix, Vantage Data Centers and Aligned Data Centers as competitors, along with miners that have "signed leases with hyperscalers and HPC tenants": Hut 8, IREN, TeraWulf, Core Scientific and Applied Digital. Cipher has signed hyperscale-grade tenants (Amazon; Fluidstack with a Google backstop; a third investment-grade hyperscaler) but delivered its first HPC capacity only in August 2026 (Q2 2026 update). That makes it a fast follower. Its self-description as "a leading developer, owner, and operator of industrial-scale data centers" is the company's own claim and is not counted.

fast follower

TrendForce's 2Q26 ranking (2026-09-09) places SMIC third at 5.4%, narrowing the gap with second-placed Samsung Foundry (5.9%) but far behind TSMC (72.5%). SMIC's own 2025 annual report ranks it 'the second globally' among pure-play foundries by 2025 sales. On technology it trails. TechInsights (2025-12-11) says SMIC's N+3 'shows meaningful density improvements' but 'remains significantly less scaled than leading commercial 5nm nodes offered by TSMC and Samsung'. The annual report concedes 'a certain gap in technical capability' compared with global industry leaders.

source: trendforce.com

co leader

Frost & Sullivan data reported by BigGo Finance (2026-07-16) rank Montage 'first globally with a 36.8% share, followed by Renesas Electronics and Rambus' on 2024 memory interface chip revenue, with the three holding 'over 93%'. Rambus's 2026-02-02 results release claims 'sustained leadership in DDR5 RCDs', a narrower product than the whole chip market, and no third-party tracker consulted confirms it. Rambus is one of three suppliers that hold the market between them, and Montage leads on the only independent ranking found, so the band is co-leader, not leader.

Pricing power weak

The 10-K says competition "has resulted in increasing competition and pricing pressure that may cause us to reduce our pricing in order to remain competitive". It adds that if customers cut usage "we may be compelled to lower our prices or risk losing a significant customer". At Barber Lake, Cipher agreed to absorb "the first $359.3 million of costs in excess of the initial budgeted amount", with the tenant reimbursing "50% of any such costs above that amount" (2026-09-25, Exhibit 99.1, https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1819989/000181998926000043/barberlakeleaseamendmentpr.htm). Its one input-cost edge is specific to mining: Odessa's power costs about 2.8 c/kWh under the Luminant contract, available "until at least July 2027". A landlord that concedes cost overruns to its tenants has weak pricing power.

moderate

Pricing is improving in a tight market but has been weak through the cycle. The 2025 annual report shows gross margin of 21.0% in 2025, 18.0% in 2024, 19.3% in 2023, 38.0% in 2022 and 30.8% in 2021. In 2Q26 gross margin rose to 25.3% from 20.1% in 1Q26 'due to the increase in average selling price and the product mix change', and the company guided 26% to 28% for 3Q26. TrendForce (2025-12-25) reports price increases 'mainly concentrated on its 8-inch BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) process platform and averaging around 10%'. TrendForce (2026-05-22) says SMIC 'negotiated price increases with customers for product categories facing supply shortages'. The annual report warns that if it 'fails to timely deliver competitive process technologies and platforms, it may face customer loss and weakened pricing power'.

source: trendforce.com

moderate

The Q2 2026 release (2026-07-27) reports product revenue of $99.2 million against cost of product revenue of $39.6 million, and a GAAP operating margin of 35% (37% in Q2 2025). The FY2025 10-K limits the case for more. It lists 'price erosion' among the industry's traits, and says clauses giving some licensees 'the lowest royalty rate that we provide to other customers' 'may limit our ability to effectively price differently among our customers, to respond quickly to market forces or otherwise to compete on the basis of price.'

Summary

Cipher built bitcoin mining data centres in Texas and is now developing single-tenant AI and HPC campuses for lease to hyperscalers. Its 10-K reports a portfolio of "4.2 gigawatts ("GW") of capacity across 10 sites". It lists a 15-year Amazon Web Services lease for about 300 MW of turnkey capacity at Black Pearl and a Fluidstack lease at Barber Lake (300 MW gross) under which Google "has agreed to backstop certain obligations of Fluidstack". It describes bitcoin mining at Odessa on a Luminant power contract at about 2.8 c/kWh. In 2026 it signed a third campus lease "with an investment-grade Hyperscale tenant" (Q1 2026 update, 2026-05-05), delivered first Black Pearl capacity in August "two months ahead of the original schedule" with rent commenced, and fully funded its Stingray development with a bond (Q2 2026 update). On 2026-09-25 it said Barber Lake's contracted life was extended from 10 to 20 years, taking contracted revenue at the site "from $3.8 billion to over $9 billion". The 10-K says Odessa was "the first bitcoin mining data center awarded the Management and Operations, or M&O, Stamp of Approval award from the Uptime Institute", which is independent recognition of how the company operates. Against this, the latest quarter's revenue was still bitcoin mining and fell to $25 million. The 10-K describes growing "competition and pricing pressure", single-tenant concentration, and termination rights for construction delays. The Barber Lake schedule was reset, and Cipher absorbs the first $359.3 million of cost overruns. Cipher's contracted pipeline is substantial, but a competitive advantage is not yet demonstrated, so it is rated as having no moat. That could change to narrow once its leased campuses are delivered and paying rent.

SMIC is China's largest foundry, running 8-inch and 12-inch fabs in Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and Shenzhen. Its 2025 annual report lists mass production on logic, power/analog, high-voltage display driver, embedded and stand-alone non-volatile memory, mixed-signal/RF and CMOS image sensor platforms. 2025 revenue was US$9,326.8 million, up 16.2%. In 2Q26, revenue was $3,005.6 million, gross margin 25.3% and utilization 93.7%, with China at 90.2% of revenue. The tailwind is localization. The report says 'more wafer foundry demand shifting back to domestic', and TrendForce (2026-05-22) says customers in HV processes and CIS 'are increasingly turning to Chinese foundries for more stable pricing and capacity availability'. At the leading edge, TechInsights (2025-12-11) confirmed that Huawei's Kirin 9030 is made on SMIC's N+3, 'a scaled evolution of its 7nm-class technology', reached without EUV lithography. TrendForce (2026-04-29) reports SMIC is the only domestic player capable of 7nm, though Huawei is said to plan shifting part of its AI chip production to Hua Hong. The limits are export controls (Entity List since 2020), a technology gap to TSMC and Samsung that the company itself concedes, and the risk of structural oversupply in China's mature nodes. The verdict is a narrow moat built on domestic scale and being China's only 7nm-capable foundry. It is not a cost or technology lead over the global leaders.

Rambus makes the buffer and support chips on DDR5 server memory modules (registering clock drivers, multiplexed data buffers, power management ICs, SPD hubs and temperature sensors). It also licenses memory-controller and security IP to chip designers, and collects royalties on a patent portfolio licensed across the DRAM and processor industry. Chips are the growth engine. Product revenue was a record $347.8 million in 2025, up 41% from 2024 (results release, 2026-02-02, https://www.rambus.com/?p=66007), and a record $99.2 million in Q2 2026. The position rests on a market that Frost & Sullivan data show three suppliers holding, with Montage first. Rambus's claim of 'sustained leadership in DDR5 RCDs' is its own, not a tracker's.

Chain position

Cipher develops single-tenant, powered data-centre campuses for hyperscale and AI tenants: Amazon at Black Pearl, Fluidstack (backstopped by Google) at Barber Lake, and an unnamed investment-grade hyperscaler at a third campus. Meanwhile it winds down bitcoin mining.

Upstream logic and specialty wafer foundry, mainly for Chinese chip designers. In 2Q26, 90.2% of revenue came from China. By application, consumer electronics was 44.2% of wafer revenue, smartphone 16.9%, industrial and automotive 16.5%, computer and tablet 15.6%, and connectivity and IoT 6.8%.

Layer-4 memory-subsystem supplier: it sells buffer and power chips for DDR5 modules to module makers, OEMs and hyperscalers, and licenses controller IP used in AI accelerators.
