| Moat rating | narrow The FY2025 10-K grounds a real but bounded advantage. Susquehanna produced about 17 TWh in 2025 at an all-in cost of about $27/MWh, and up to 1,920 MW of it is contracted to AWS under a long-term, fixed-price PPA through 2042 'at anticipated premium prices', with deliveries expected to ramp to full volume no later than 2032. The moat is narrow rather than wide because, outside its contracts, the fleet sells into competitive wholesale markets, and the 10-K says that 'unlike regulated utilities, we are not assured of any rate of return on capital investments through a regulated rate structure'. It also concedes that competitors 'may have advantages over us through access to greater resources, newer generation facilities, lower costs, or more experience'. The advantage is also concentrated: Susquehanna has typically been about half of total annual generation. | none The 2025 annual report (English translation filed with TWSE 2026-04-28) shows scale without a protected return: revenue of NT$2.1865 trillion, up 108%, at a gross profit margin of 6.1% and a consolidated operating profit margin of 3.6%, with gross profit up 59.33% against net revenues up 108.39%. The report's own list of unfavorable factors opens with "Intense Price Competition and Declining Gross Profit Margins" and says the IT industry, "with its relatively low barriers to entry, has attracted numerous manufacturers, leading to fierce competition", while its key-buyer table puts Buyer A at 39.32%, Buyer E at 21.21% and Buyer I at 12.81% of 2025 net sales. A large, competitive incumbent whose own filing concedes the entry barriers are relatively low: no moat is claimable. | wide The FY2026 10-K (filed 2026-07-29) restates both structural mechanisms verbatim. On cost: the cloud business 'benefits from three economies of scale' — datacenters with 'significantly lower cost per unit than smaller ones', demand aggregation, and multi-tenancy that lowers maintenance labor. On ecosystem: 'A well-established ecosystem creates beneficial network effects among users, application developers, and the platform provider that can accelerate growth.' Both are load-bearing at the new scale — 'Microsoft Cloud revenue increased 27% to $214.4 billion' and 'Commercial remaining performance obligation increased 84% to $678 billion.' Rated wide but held below full confidence because the same filing still cautions that 'Barriers to entry in many of our businesses are low.' |
| Moat type | cost scale The 10-K says Talen's ability to compete 'is affected primarily by electricity prices, fuel prices, the relative cost of electric generation, and the reliability and availability of generation assets'. The edge it cites is low-cost baseload supply: Susquehanna, the seventh-largest U.S. nuclear plant, produced power at an all-in cost of about $27/MWh in 2025, under NRC licences that expire in 2042 and 2044. The 10-K says natural gas facilities 'often serve as the marginal, price-setting generating units' and that energy margin is influenced by the relationship between electricity and natural gas prices, so a low-cost nuclear unit earns the gap between market price and its own cost. The AWS adjacency is a contract rather than a fleet-wide switching cost, and network effects and IP do not apply. | none The report's "Competitive Niches" section lists operating capabilities rather than a durable barrier: an R&D team of "over 5,600 people", manufacturing bases in Taiwan, U.S.A., China, Mexico, Czech Republic, Vietnam and Malaysia, lean manufacturing, product quality, supplier relationships, global logistics and an experienced management team. None of these is a patent position or a customer lock-in: R&D expenses were 1.43% of 2025 revenue, the Company reports 120 U.S. and 122 Taiwan patents granted in 2025, and the niche section's description of brand clients "each comprising an equal share of our sales" sits beside a key-buyer table in which a single buyer took 39.32% of 2025 net sales. | network effects The FY2026 10-K keeps the ecosystem passage scoped to the firm: 'An important element of our business model has been to create platform-based ecosystems on which many participants can build diverse solutions. A well-established ecosystem creates beneficial network effects among users, application developers, and the platform provider that can accelerate growth.' That remains the one moat mechanism the filing asserts about Microsoft as a whole; the cost-of-scale passage stays scoped to 'our cloud business'. |
| Leadership | at parity Talen calls itself 'a leading independent power producer', but its merchant output is undifferentiated. The 10-K says it sells into PJM capacity auctions and day-ahead and real-time markets against 'other non-utility generators, regulated utilities and their competitive subsidiaries, industrial companies, financial institutions, and other energy marketers', and that some rivals may have greater resources, newer plants or lower costs. Susquehanna's rank as the seventh-largest U.S. nuclear facility shows scale, not market leadership. | at parity Citing MIC (February 2026), the report puts the Company at approximately 18% of the roughly 135,350K notebooks, 24% of the 39,711K desktops and 22% of the 12,370K servers manufactured in Taiwan in 2025, and lists it among the major Taiwan ODMs in every category it charts (notebooks with Quanta, Compal, Inventec and Pegatron; servers with Hon Hai, Quanta, Inventec and MiTAC). It describes this only as "considerable market competitiveness" and claims no first-place rank. | co leader The FY2026 10-K asserts leadership nowhere. Its AI offerings 'compete with AI products from hyperscalers, as well as products from other emerging competitors and other open-source offerings, many of which are also current or potential partners' — one of a small set at hyperscale in cloud and AI, an incumbent in productivity and PC operating systems. |
| Pricing power | moderate Pricing power is mixed and sits in the AWS contract. The AWS PPA is fixed-price 'at anticipated premium prices' through 2042, and the 10-K says such large-load contracts 'can lock in meaningful premiums'. The Brandon Shores and H.A. Wagner RMR agreements provide FERC-approved annual fixed-cost payments of $145 million and $35 million from June 1, 2025, each including a performance hold-back, and FERC's approval is under appeal by the Maryland Office of People's Counsel; they give revenue certainty rather than pricing power. The merchant remainder takes market prices. The 10-K says gas units 'often serve as the marginal, price-setting generating units', and the PJM auction imposed a capacity price collar with an approximate minimum and maximum of $175/MWd and $325/MWd for the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 auctions. In the 2027/2028 auction Talen cleared 8,745 MW at $333.44/MWd. | weak 2025 gross profit margin was 6.1% and consolidated operating profit margin 3.6%; gross profit rose 59.33% while net revenues rose 108.39%, so the margin narrowed. The report's first unfavorable factor is "Intense Price Competition and Declining Gross Profit Margins", and three buyers accounted for 39.32%, 21.21% and 12.81% of 2025 net sales. | strong The FY2026 10-K reports 'Gross margin increased $31.6 billion or 16% with growth across each of our segments', with 'Microsoft 365 Commercial revenue ... mainly affected by a combination of continued installed base growth and average revenue per user expansion'. The honest caveat: gross margin percentage 'decreased slightly driven by continued investments in AI infrastructure and growing AI product usage', with Microsoft Cloud gross margin down to 66%. |
| Summary | Talen's advantage comes from one contracted asset. It owns 90% of the 2.5 GW Susquehanna nuclear plant, which produced about 17 TWh in 2025 at about $27/MWh all-in, and it has agreed to supply the adjacent AWS data campus with up to 1,920 MW under a fixed-price PPA through 2042. The rest of its roughly 13.1 GW fleet at the 10-K date (a total that includes its 2.2 GW nuclear share) includes newly acquired H-class combined-cycle gas plants, intermediate and peaking units, the Brandon Shores and H.A. Wagner units kept running under FERC-approved RMR agreements, and about 800 MW of minority interests in three coal-fired plants. Apart from the RMR units, that fleet sells capacity and energy mainly into competitive PJM markets through capacity auctions, spot markets and futures contracts, and the 10-K notes that, 'unlike regulated utilities, we are not assured of any rate of return on capital investments through a regulated rate structure'. The 10-K's 'Talen flywheel' strategy is to repeat the AWS model with other large-load buyers. Until more of the fleet is contracted, the moat stays narrow and concentrated in Susquehanna. | Wistron is a Taiwanese ODM whose business, per its 2025 annual report, "primarily covers the R&D, manufacturing, testing and after-sales services" of servers and AI computing devices, notebooks, desktops, monitors and other electronics, with 3C electronics at 98.5% of 2025 sales. Revenue more than doubled to NT$2.1865 trillion on what the Chairman's letter calls "triple-digit percentage growth in revenue from AI and general-purpose servers", and the report cites MIC data placing the Company at approximately 18% of Taiwan-made notebooks, 24% of desktops and 22% of servers in 2025. Against that, the gross profit margin was 6.1%, the report's own unfavorable factors name intense price competition, declining gross margins and relatively low barriers to entry, and three buyers took 39.32%, 21.21% and 12.81% of 2025 net sales. The long-term plan is to expand the proportion of higher-margin products such as AI computing devices and servers, and the manufacturing policy aims automation and AI-driven intelligent manufacturing at "higher-complexity, technically demanding product segments — expanding gross margins" — a stated path toward an advantage, not evidence that one exists yet. | One repeated model across segments — build a platform, attract developers and partners, monetize the ecosystem that forms — now compounding through the AI wave: FY2026 revenue rose 18 percent 'driven by growth in Microsoft Cloud', Azure and other cloud services grew 41 percent, and the commercial remaining performance obligation reached $678 billion, while the filing still concedes low barriers to entry in many businesses. |
| Chain position | Supplies nuclear power from Susquehanna to Amazon's adjacent AWS data campus, and sells capacity and energy into the PJM grid. | Contract designer-manufacturer for brand and cloud customers: the report describes "professional OEM services supporting clients with world renowned brands", lists CPUs, SSDs and DRAM as main materials, and among its 2025 R&D results lists GPU servers supporting NVIDIA B300, AMD MI355 and Intel Gaudi 3. | Hyperscale AI-infrastructure buyer and platform distributor: monetizes upstream compute through Azure, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and the developer ecosystem. |
