Summary

TSMC's third quarter of 2026 (ended September 30, reported October 15) beat its own guidance, and the fourth-quarter guide asks for more. US-dollar revenue was $46.72 billion against a 44.6-45.8 billion guided range, HPC rose 22% from the second quarter to 68% of revenue, and 2-nanometer reached 8% of wafer revenue. The weaker-looking lines have plain explanations in the documents. Gross margin fell 1.3 points to 66.4%, which management put mainly on the 2-nanometer ramp, and net income rose only 8.0% while income from operations rose 14.3%, because non-operating items were far smaller than in the second quarter. Our read: this is a supply story, not a demand story. Management says demand is still higher than supply, has nearly 20 fabs in progress, expects N2-family capacity to more than double in 2027, and reiterated a USD60 billion to USD64 billion capital budget for 2026. The price of that build is margin. Overseas-fab dilution, closer to 2% this year, is expected to widen to 3% to 4% in the next few years, and management is planning 2027 prudently because consumer and price-sensitive segments face rising component prices. The thing to watch is whether scale and pricing can offset the twin drags of the 2-nanometer ramp and the overseas fabs on gross margin.

From the call

Management's message was that demand is still higher than supply, and its answer is to build: nearly 20 fabs in progress, N2-family capacity more than doubling in 2027 and a reiterated USD60 billion to USD64 billion capital budget for 2026. The cost shows up in margins, with fourth-quarter gross margin guided down 40 basis points to 66% at the midpoint and overseas-fab dilution expected to widen to 3% to 4% in the next few years. The cautious note was on consumer and price-sensitive segments, which is why management is planning 2027 prudently even as it expects 2026 revenue growth of around 44%.

  • CFO Wendell Huang put the 1.3-point sequential drop in gross margin, to 66.4%, mainly on dilution from the 2-nanometer ramp. show quote
“Gross margin decreased by 1.3 percentage points sequentially to 66.4%, primarily due to margin dilution from 2-nanometer ramp.”

  • The fourth-quarter revenue guide of USD52.3 billion to USD54.3 billion implies a 14% sequential increase and a 58% year-over-year increase at the midpoint. show quote
“we expect our fourth quarter revenue to be between USD52.3 billion and USD54.3 billion, which represents a 14% sequential increase or a 58% year-over-year increase at the midpoint.”

  • Fourth-quarter gross margin is guided down 40 basis points to 66% at the midpoint, on continued 2-nanometer dilution and the overseas fabs, partly offset by productivity gains and capacity optimization across nodes. show quote
“We have just guided our fourth quarter gross margin to decrease by 40 basis points to 66% at the midpoint, primarily due to the continued margin dilution from the steep ramp-up of our 2-nanometer technology, as well as dilution from overseas fabs. These impacts are expected to be partially offset by cost improvement efforts, including productivity gains and across-node capacity optimization.”

  • Gross-margin dilution from overseas fabs is now expected to be closer to 2% for 2026, widening to 3% to 4% in the next few years as more US fabs ramp. show quote
“we now expect the gross margin dilution from the ramp-up of our overseas fabs to be closer to 2% for the full year 2026. As we put more effort to support the strong structural demand from our customers, more fabs will be ramping up in the US. Thus, we expect the dilution from our overseas fabs to widen to 3% to 4% in the next few years.”

  • CEO C.C. Wei said consumer and price-sensitive segments are being challenged by rising component prices and economic uncertainty, so TSMC is planning 2027 prudently. Leading-edge demand remains extremely robust, and TSMC now expects 2026 revenue growth of around 44% in US-dollar terms. show quote
“Looking ahead, we continue to observe consumer and price-sensitive end market segments are being challenged due to the impact of rising component prices and more economic uncertainties. As such, we are being prudent in our business planning going into 2027, while focusing on the fundamentals of our business to further strengthen our competitive position. Having said that, demand for our leading-edge technologies continues to be extremely robust, supported by our strong technology differentiation and broader customer base. Therefore, we now expect our full year 2026 revenue growth to be around 44% year-over-year in US dollar terms.”

  • TSMC reiterated its 2026 capital budget of USD60 billion to USD64 billion, citing multiyear demand including the emerging agentic AI market, and expects CapEx from 2026 to 2028 to be significantly higher than in the past three years. show quote
“Given the continued robust multiyear demand from our customers, including the emerging agentic AI market, we reiterate our full year 2026 capital budget to be between USD60 billion and USD64 billion. We continue to expect our CapEx dollars investment from 2026 to 2028 and to be even more significantly higher than the past three years, as we continue to invest heavily to support our customers' growth.”

  • Asked about capital intensity, Huang said tool price inflation is real but most CapEx follows long-term demand, and he still expects revenue growth to outpace CapEx growth. show quote
“The tool price inflation is real. The tool price, material, labor costs, et cetera. However, the majority of the CapEx is always related to the long-term demand. So that will be the composition going forward. And capital intensity-wise -- as we always said, if we do our job right, the increase in revenue will outpace the increase in CapEx, and that is still the case from what we are looking at.”

  • Wei said TSMC's own assessment weighs CSP CapEx, data-center build-out, financing, power and component supply, and still puts demand above supply. show quote
“And let me share with you, we put every possibility we can, talking about the CSPs, CapEx, data centers’ build-out, financial, power supply, and also other components’ supply, et cetera, into our consideration. And so we make our own judgment -- and then based on our assessed demand, we still think the demand is higher than the supply, and we are working very hard to narrow the gap.”

  • Asked to update the AI accelerator growth framework, Wei gave no new number but said he saw no sign of slowdown against a high 50% CAGR and that growth probably will be higher. show quote
“Laura, all I can say right now is the demand is very extremely robust, okay? And we did not see any sign of slowdown whether it's high 50% CAGR, it doesn't matter, it probably will be higher.”

  • Wei said TSMC has sent teams to evaluate Texas as a site beyond Arizona, and is still in discussion with a customer building a fab, Terafab, about using that capacity. show quote
“So recently, we did expand our capacity’s consideration to see outside Arizona where we can get another chance to expand our capacity. That Texas is one. So we send the teams to Texas to do all the evaluation. And we also talk to one of our customers who try to build a fab, Terafab, let me be more specific. And we discussed with them to see whether that we can be utilizing that actual capacity also. So we're still in discussion.”
