Moat rating narrow

Ciena's FY2025 10-K describes a technology position that has held but does not lock customers in. On the durable side, the strategy is to "build on and expand our global leadership in optical networking", resting on "our proprietary WaveLogic™ coherent modem technology" and approximately 2,400 issued patents with 800 more pending as of December 2, 2025. On the limiting side, the same filing says competition "remains intense" and features "aggressive selling efforts, including using significant pricing pressure to displace incumbent vendors", that "our customer contracts generally do not include minimum or guaranteed purchases", and that "there is no assurance that we will maintain our incumbency". Concentration cuts the same way: the five largest customers contributed approximately 50% of fiscal 2025 revenue, one cloud provider approximately 18%. Its income statement reports gross profit of $1,878.9M on $4,386.5M of revenue in FY2023, $1,719.6M on $4,015.0M in FY2024 and $2,004.9M on $4,769.5M in FY2025. Self-described leadership in its segments, with customers that are re-won deal by deal, is a narrow moat.

wide

TSMC's 2025 Form 20-F reports a 59.9% gross margin (up from 56.1% in 2024) and describes the company as "the technology leader among the dedicated foundries" in advanced (7-nanometer-and-below) node revenue — a durable, hard-to-replicate process-and-scale advantage that rivals with "greater financial and other resources" have not matched.

source: sec.gov

narrow

Narrow, not wide, because the FY2026 10-K documents a strong installed base and a competitive position the company itself says is under erosion. On the asset side: revenue of $4.7 billion (29% growth in each of the last three fiscal years), 13,328 total customers up from 10,996, 790 of the Forbes Global 2000 contributing about 43% of revenue, 733 customers above $1 million in trailing-12-month product revenue up from 576, a 125% net revenue retention rate, and more than 1,050 issued U.S. patents. Against that, Item 1A states plainly that adopting open data formats like Apache Iceberg means 'there is less customer “lock in” when our products are used in external environments' and that 'our support of open data formats may also reduce switching costs between us and our competitors'; that AWS, Azure and GCP 'generally compete in all of our markets' while also supplying the infrastructure a 'substantial majority of our business is run on'; and that the company remains loss-making at $1.3 billion of net loss for the year.

Moat type intangibles ip

The FY2025 10-K locates the advantage in owned technology rather than in customer lock-in: "The success of our business and technology leadership depends significantly on our proprietary and internally developed technology." That technology is centred on WaveLogic, which Ciena's fiscal Q3 2026 earnings presentation (the source of the first two product rows below) defines as "Ciena's proprietary family of coherent optical chips — the core technology inside most of our networking products", and it reaches beyond Ciena's own systems: the 10-K's coherent pluggable transceivers use WaveLogic "for use within our systems and third-party equipment". Switching costs are the weaker candidate, because the same filing describes operators disaggregating line systems from modems and competitors using price to displace incumbents.

intangibles ip

Per its 2025 Form 20-F, TSMC "compete[s] primarily on process technologies, manufacturing excellence, customer trust and service quality" and has "been issued a substantial number of patents," with 2-nanometer in volume production in 2025 and 16-angstrom risk production targeted for 2026 — proprietary process-technology know-how and IP, not merely capital (the filing explicitly notes some competitors may have greater financial resources yet still trail), are the core barrier.

switching costs

The filing makes its own affirmative claim of network effects — 'Our business benefits from powerful network effects. ... The more customers adopt our platform, the more data can be exchanged with other Snowflake customers, partners, data providers, and data consumers' — but the load-bearing, quantified evidence in the document points to switching costs. The platform is sold as the way to 'consolidate data into a single source of truth,' and the disclosed economics of that consolidation are a 125% net revenue retention rate and 733 customers above $1 million in trailing product revenue. Item 1A confirms the mechanism by naming what is at risk: open formats produce 'less customer “lock in”' and 'may also reduce switching costs.' The filing frames lock-in, not network density, as the thing erosion would take away.

Leadership co leader

Slide 6 of Ciena's fiscal Q3 2026 earnings presentation of 2026-09-03 (https://s25.q4cdn.com/550667411/files/content_files/Ex-99-2-2026-Q3-Earnings-Presentation_FINAL-1.pdf) lists "#1 in Data Center Interconnect Globally" (Dell'Oro Group), "#1 in Total Optical Networking in N. America" (Cignal AI, Dell'Oro Group, Omdia) and "#1 in Submarine Networks Globally" (Omdia), with market share measured as of Q2 2026 excluding China, and a caveat that Ciena "has not independently verified" the analyst data. On the company's own presentation of that data, that is the front rank in its core segments, but the presentation does not claim the global lead in total optical networking, and the FY2025 10-K says competition is "dominated by a small number of very large, multi-national companies" - Nokia, Huawei, Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and ZTE - many of which have "substantially greater financial, operational and marketing resources, and broader product offerings". A shared front rank, led by Ciena where the company-reported rankings measure it, rather than an uncontested one.

clear leader

Self-described in its 2025 20-F as "the technology leader among the dedicated foundries" in net revenue of advanced semiconductors at 7-nanometer and below; reached 2nm volume production in 2025, and Epoch AI estimates ~90% share of global advanced-node fabrication.

co leader

The 10-K contains no ranking, market-share figure, or claim of leadership, and it names no non-hyperscaler competitor by name. The band rests on disclosed scale — $4.7 billion of revenue, 13,328 customers, 9,060 employees across 36 countries — set against the filing's own statement that 'many of our competitors have substantially greater brand recognition, customer relationships, and financial, technical, and other resources than we do.' Co-leader among independent cloud data platforms; not a leader over AWS, Azure and GCP, which the filing says compete in all of its markets.

Pricing power moderate

Moderate, and improving. The FY2025 10-K's income statement reports gross profit of $1,878.9M on $4,386.5M, $1,719.6M on $4,015.0M and $2,004.9M on $4,769.5M of revenue for FY2023-FY2025, in a market where, the filing says, rivals use "significant pricing pressure to displace incumbent vendors" and "price and total cost of ownership" heads the list of competitive factors. Since then the AI build-out has lifted gross margin: Ciena's fiscal Q3 2026 earnings presentation (https://s25.q4cdn.com/550667411/files/content_files/Ex-99-2-2026-Q3-Earnings-Presentation_FINAL-1.pdf) reports GAAP gross margin of 45.4% against 41.3% a year earlier, on revenue up 37% year over year, and guides fiscal 2027 adjusted gross margin to 45% to 46%. The presentation does not say how much of that is price rather than mix or volume, and the 10-K warns that AI-related demand has led to "a constrained supply environment" that can raise component costs.

strong

2025 gross margin of 59.9% (up from 56.1% in 2024), attributed in the 20-F to higher capacity utilization and cost improvement, reflects strong pricing power at the leading edge despite the heavy capital intensity of new-node ramps.

source: sec.gov

moderate

The consumption model plus 125% net revenue retention shows real expansion pricing, and the filing argues it competes on 'pricing transparency and optimized price-performance.' But Item 1A limits how far that goes: competition 'may negatively impact our ability to acquire new customers ... put downward pressure on our prices and gross margins'; the company 'may not be able to ... offer as many discounts or free services as our competitors'; results depend on 'changes in our pricing model, including in response to significant price discounts by our competitors' and on 'customer optimization efforts that result in reduced consumption.' On the cost side, 'our costs and gross margins are significantly influenced by the prices we are able to negotiate with these public cloud providers, which in certain cases are also our competitors.'

Summary

Ciena is the optical-transport specialist among networking vendors - its fiscal Q3 2026 earnings presentation calls it "the only pure-play optical systems provider operating at scale today" - and its FY2025 10-K builds the business on one proprietary technology, the WaveLogic coherent modem, carried into the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, Waveserver data center interconnect systems, the 6500 RLS photonic line system and coherent pluggable transceivers sold for Ciena's own systems and third-party equipment. Analyst rankings the company cites in that presentation, which it says it "has not independently verified", put Ciena first in data center interconnect globally, in total optical networking in North America and in submarine networks globally (Q2 2026, excluding China). The AI build-out has turned it into more of a cloud supplier than a telecom one: cloud providers were 53% of fiscal Q3 2026 revenue, revenue rose 37% year over year, and GAAP gross margin reached 45.4%. The 10-K is equally clear about why the position is narrow rather than wide. Competition is "dominated by a small number of very large, multi-national companies", many with greater resources; rivals use pricing to displace incumbents; contracts carry no minimum or guaranteed purchases; the five largest customers were about half of fiscal 2025 revenue; and disaggregation lets an operator buy the line system from one vendor and the modem from another, while the push into data-center interconnects brings Ciena up against Marvell, Credo and Broadcom.

TSMC is the world's largest dedicated semiconductor foundry and, per its 2025 Form 20-F, the self-described technology leader among dedicated foundries in advanced (7nm-and-below) node revenue, having reached 2-nanometer volume production in 2025 with 16-angstrom risk production on track for 2026. Independent research (Epoch AI) estimates it controls roughly 90% of global advanced-node fabrication; sustained by US$7.9 billion of 2025 R&D, a large patent portfolio and 59.9% gross margins, this process-technology and scale advantage has proven durable even against rivals with greater financial resources.

Snowflake's advantage in its FY2026 10-K rests on being the consolidation point for enterprise data: a multi-cluster shared-data architecture with proprietary columnar storage and automatic micro-partitioning, delivered across three major public clouds and 53 interconnected regional deployments, that customers adopt as a single governed source of truth and then expand on — 125% net revenue retention, 790 of the Forbes Global 2000 as customers. The filing layers a collaboration claim on top, with sharing 'generally without copying or moving the underlying data' and a Marketplace of 'hundreds of live, ready-to-query third-party data sets and data products.' The same document is unusually candid about the counter-pressure: Iceberg and open formats reduce lock-in by the company's own account, the three hyperscalers compete across every market while setting the cloud costs that 'significantly influence' gross margins, and frontier AI model providers 'may seek to vertically integrate ... by expanding into the data storage and management layers.'

Chain position

Ciena sits between optical-component suppliers and the operators building AI-era networks. Upstream, its FY2025 10-K says its products include "optical and electronic components for which reliable, high-volume supply is often available only from sole or limited sources", built by contract manufacturers with facilities in Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States; at November 1, 2025 it carried $826.2 million of inventory and $2.1 billion of purchase commitments. Downstream, the fiscal Q3 2026 earnings presentation puts direct cloud providers at 53% of the quarter's revenue against 37% for service providers, and describes its products as the links between data centers (data center interconnect) and between distributed AI training clusters ("scale-across").

The critical leading-edge fabrication and advanced-packaging (CoWoS) layer of the AI supply chain — high-performance computing was 58% of TSMC's 2025 revenue, and it supplies leading-edge N2/N3/N4 logic to the fabless IC-design and system companies that design AI accelerators.

Sits at the enterprise data and governance layer of the AI stack, and the AI exposure is explicit rather than incidental: the filing brands the product the 'AI Data Cloud,' lists AI as a product category, and put Snowflake Intelligence, Cortex Agents and a Managed MCP Server into general availability during the fiscal year. It is a buyer of hyperscaler compute and of third-party frontier models — 'strategic partnerships with foundational model providers deliver state-of-the-art models natively within Snowflake Cortex AI,' with stated 'model neutrality' — and a supplier of governed enterprise data and GPU-backed managed compute to AI applications built on top.
